River Parana Draft Forecast:
Basis INA Report of August 04st and Depth Report of August 03rd.
River Parana, UPRIVER WATER LEVELS FORECAST, DEPTHS, AND DRAFT:
Water levels as well as last forecasts are changing. Water level is receeding, but forecasts are still predicting higher levels. This is unusual as usually (see graph below with Margin Errors) the INA forecasts predict ‘lower levels’ than are usually achieved and not the other way around. On the other hand, the Depth has deteriorated in one full meter (from 9.20m to a sharp fall at 8.20m depth today – see graph Evolution of Depth against Water Level). Therefore, adding lower water levels to the lower depth, the resulting Draft is significantly compromised. There is no information regarding if or when dredger/s will be assigned to this new bar which is jeopardizing sailing draft from ALL San Lorenzo’s terminals. We are monitoring constantly until INA returns to relatively stable forecast and will update with comments in this regard.
Grains and Markets:
Algeria has purchased 660 thousand tons of wheat. Dates 2nd half September and full October. The origins are various. Jordan has purchased 60 thousand tons. Origin is unreported.
Tunisia is reported to be looking for 50 thousand tons of barley.
Sunflower seed oil from Argentina:
Due to hostilities in the Black Sea region and consequent shortfall in supply of Russian and Ukrainian sunflower seed products Argentina will be increasing the surface of sunflower seed to be sown during the 2022/2023 harvest. During the 2021/2022 harvest a total of 1.73 million hectares were sown and a yield of 3.4 million tons attained. The forecast for the coming 2022/2023 harvest is for a total 2,16 million hectares to be sown. The main exportable by-product that is exported is sunoil.
The protestors at Necochea have lifted the picket lines at the port entrances and access is now back to normal.
Despite this and other protests Necochea is reporting an increase of 300 thousand tons of grains in the tonnage handled during first half 2022 compared to first half of 2021.
Much of this is owed to the shortage of sufficient draft in the River Parana at Upriver ports that makes vessels having to call South Atlantic ports for completion.
