Grains and Markets:

Just to make a little fun the Government is again thinking of coming up with a new “bonus” exchange rate season (month) for soyabean exports. The Government’s short term USD cash needs are incessant.

It is reported that 80.6 per cent of the soyabean harvest (44,000,000 tons for 2021/2022) are sold. At this time last year 82.6 per cent had been sold.

Honduras and Vietnam are looking for soya beans on April dates, Israel wants soyabeans on similar dates.

Malaysia and Colombia are looking for maize on April dates.

Tierra del Fuego, Rio Grande port:

The Government of Tierra del Fuego and China Shaanxi Chemical Industry Group have signed an agreement to build a fertilizer production plant with an associated port at Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego.

The plant is designed to produce 600,000 tons of synthetic ammonium, 900,000 tons of urea and 100,000 tons of glyphosate per annum.

The port is designed to berth vessels loading at the plant.

Additionally, they have plans to build a multipurpose pier  which would take vessels of up to 20,000 tons dwt.

This has caused uproar on a nationwide scale since there accusations that the multipurpose area would then be used to support Chinese surveys and expeditions in the Antarctic region.

Hard to say, at this point, if the allegations and locally frayed nerves are right or not.

China has already set up a satellite tracking station in Patagonia.

Despite all the speculation, an ocean port in Rio Grande would take a lot of pressure of Ushuaia which has limited facilities and serves all the province’s needs.

Copper mining in North Western Argentina:

A new copper prospect is developing in Salta province.

The mine’s reported potential is 2,170,000 tons of copper over a 28 year period.

The area connects with the rail network nearby that leads to the Upriver ports for export.
