GENERAL STRIKE – MAY 09TH

The Trade Unions Confederation (CGT) has called out a Nationwide General Strike for May 09th.

It is to protest the National Government’s proposed labor reforms that are being put to vote in Congress.

All transport unions are advising they will be joining the strike so services for the maritime industry are to be affected.

This means that tugboats, pilot boats, mooring gangs, stevedores will be restricting services during the day.

We will be advising in detail for all attended vessels.

Grains and Markets:

Chinese buyers (Sinograin) are reported to be actively buying soya beans from Argentina as the harvest gets well underway. Usually Panamax volumes, Upriver plus completion.

Philippine buyers are in the market for a Supramax of soya bean meal, June dates.

Algerian buyers eventually are reported to have purchased 60,000 tons of maize for May dates (spot).

2024-2025 harvest Outlook:

The view today, on to the 2024-2025 harvest is beginning to be discussed.

The talk is of a general gain by soya beans on the maize measured by the area to be sown.

If these projections are correct, at the time of harvesting the total production could rise to slightly over 51,000,000 tons.

This means that, according to this outlook, the sowing area of soya beans will gain slightly on the area dedicated to maize.

Fertilizer imports:

The Government is to reduce import tariffs on fertilizers to 0 per cent.

DAP, MAP and Phos rock are the principal fertilizers imported.

Most urea is produced locally.

This may serve to jump start imports which have been at an unusually low level this year.
