Grains and Markets:
Thais are still in the market for a Supramax of soya beans in May.
Also Colombians for a Supramax of soya bean meal in June.
Nigerians are still looking for a Supramax of wheat during July.
2023-2024 Harvest Soya beans and maize:
The maize harvest is now underway with 11 per cent of the sown area now lifted.
Various surveys are now talking about a significant drop in the volume due to an infestation by a bug called “chicharrita” (“leaf hoppers” in English).
This is a bug which causes stunted growth and damage to the grains on maize plants.

Originally the harvest volume had been estimated at 56,000,000 tons.
Estimates by various surveys have reduced the volume to between 53,000,000 tons and 50,200,000 tons in the most pessimistic views.
The soya bean harvest (also underway) is still estimated at 51,000,000 tons to which may be added 10,250,000 tons from Paraguay.
Soya beans are mostly dedicated to export, unlike maize which has a strong local demand, and soya beans are mainly processed for oil and meal exports.
