Grains and Markets:

South Korea (MFG) purchased 68,000 tons of maize on late August/early September dates. Origin ECSA.

Egypt is reported in the market for a Panamax of soya beans in July, Colombia is in for a soya meal Supramax in June and Vietnam for a Supramax of soya meal in August.

Volumes traded locally under the “bonus” exchange rate for soya beans is well below the same period under the previous two schemes. Physical volumes are not reported, only the USD amounts (value) but they are below expectations.

We will follow this.

Strikes:

The grain surveyor’s strike (URGARA) has been lifted. Loading at grain ports has returned to normal.

The seamen’s union tried to call a strike yesterday 17th but a mandatory truce period (15 working days) was ordered by the Government.

Let’s see what happens in early May.

Soya bean imports:

During March 1,590,000 tons of Paraguay soya beans were imported for crushing to Upriver.

These imports are carried by barge down the Paraguay and Parana rivers.

Imports of Brazilian soya beans, during April, are forecast to be in the order of 215,000 tons.

These are carried on ocean freight from North Brazil ports.

Principally Itacoatiara and Santarem.
