Strikes:

A nationwide transport strike has been announced for Monday May 06th.

It has not yet been detailed how this will affect ports and pilotage services.

Soonest we know we will be getting back to all.

Grains and Markets:

Algerians (OACI) have tendered for 70,000 tons soya bean meal, May dates.

Algerians, same as above, have also tendered for 160,000 tons of maize, also May dates.

South Korea’s MFG has purchased 134,000 tons of maize, July dates. Sourcing undisclosed.

Chileans will be purchasing a Supramax of maize for June.

Downgrade of the maize 2023-2024 harvest:

The Buenos Aires Grains Exchange has again lowered the volume of the maize harvest.

The expected total for the harvest, now underway, has been forecast at 46,500,000 tons

This drop in the estimated total harvest is principally caused by an infestation by an insect that has affected about 17 per cent of the sown surface.

The insect described as “chicharrita”, a type of leafhopper, has been a surprise to many in the agricultural production areas, and no artificial bactericides were on hand to counter it.

Imports are now underway to prepare for the coming 2024-2025 harvest.
